Tables relevant to the published COMARE 11th Report

In July 2006 the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (COMARE) published its Eleventh Report entitled "The distribution of childhood cancers in Great Britain 1969-1993". This report contained a large number of tables some of which were summaries of an even larger number of more detailed tables. Table 3B of the published report listed the more detailed tables which were to be made available on the website of the Childhood Cancer Research Group in relation to Chapter 3 of the Report - "Incidence of childhood leukaemia and other childhood cancers in Great Britain: some socio-demographic factors affecting rates analysed at county district and census ward level”. These additional data are given here at 2 geographical levels (county district and ward) and for 4 socio-demographic factors (Carstairs Index of socio-economic status, degree of overcrowding, population density, and urban/rural classification). At ward level, data are also given separately for England+Wales and for Scotland, and also for an alternative time-period 1976-1985. Further information concerning these tables can be obtained by contacting the Childhood Cancer Research Group.

The methods of analysis used for these tables, definitions, and a guide to the diagnostic classification are set out in Annex 3B and Table 1.1 of the published Report. See also the Glossary in the Report.

Table 3.4 Numbers of cases and rates (per million) for 1969-1993 for England, Wales and Scotland county districts by diagnostic group and socio-demographic factors

Table3.4.pdf given here on the website corresponds to the set of tables 3.4a-3.4d in the published report COMARE-11. These are summaries of data for the period 1969-1993 drawn from an original series of 23 sub-tables (given here on the website as a single 23 page table - Table3.4_by_age.pdf) . Each of the original sub-tables comprises a single diagnostic group (or sub-group) and gives data by 5-year age-group for each of the 4 socio-demographic variables. The 0-14 age-standardised-rates (ASRs - defined in the Glossary of the Report) for each diagnostic group have been collected together from these tables and assembled into the published tables (3.4a - 3.4d) by socio-demographic factor.

Table 3.5 Numbers of cases and rates (per million) for England and Wales wards by diagnostic group and socio-demographic factors

Table3.5.pdf given here on the website corresponds to the set of tables 3.5a-3.5d in the published report COMARE-11. These are summaries of data for the period 1969-1993 drawn from an original series of 23 sub-tables (given here on the website as a single 23 page table - Table3.5_by_age.pdf). Each of the original sub-tables comprises a single diagnostic group (or sub-group) and gives data by 5-year age-group for each of the 4 socio-demographic variables. The 0-14 age-standardised-rates (ASRs) for each diagnostic group have been collected together from these tables and assembled into the published tables (3.5a - 3.5d) by socio-demographic factor.

Table3.5_by_age_1976-85.pdf contains a single 23 page table giving data for the period 1976-1985. A separate page is given for each diagnostic group (or sub-group) providing data by 5-year age group and the 0-14 ASR for each of the 4 socio-demographic variables.

Table 3.6 Numbers of cases and rates (per million) for Scottish wards by diagnostic group and socio-demographic factors

Table3.6.pdf given here on the website corresponds to the set of tables 3.6a-3.6d in the published report COMARE-11. These are summaries of data for the period 1969-1993 drawn from an original series of 23 sub-tables (given here on the website as a single 23 page table - Table3.6_by_age.pdf) . Each of the original sub-tables comprises a single diagnostic group (or sub-group) and gives data by 5-year age-group for each of the 4 socio-demographic variables. The 0-14 age-standardised-rates (ASRs) for each diagnostic group have been collected together from these tables and assembled into the published tables (3.6a - 3.6d) by socio-demographic factor.

Table3.6_by_age_1976-85.pdf contains a single 23 page table giving data for the period 1976-1985. A separate page is given for each diagnostic group (or sub-group) providing data by 5-year age group and the 0-14 ASR for each of the 4 socio-demographic variables.

Table 3.8 Age-standardised rates (per million) analysing pairs of socio-demographic variables simultaneously for the period 1976-1985 for England and Wales wards

Table3.8_1976-85.pdf contains ASRs for selected diagnostic groups for England and Wales wards for the time period 1976-1985. Tertiles of socio-economic status (SES), degree of overcrowding and population density, and categories of urban/rural classification have been used. Each of the 4 socio-demographic factors has been analysed in combination with each of the other 3 factors, with the exception of the combination of SES with degree of overcrowding (this is because overcrowding is itself a component of the SES).

The output of the analyses for the 5 year age groups are currently being prepared for web publication
